Wuerzburg

On Saturday we went to Wuerzburg, an hour's drive east from Hanau on A3. Wuerzburg is the northern-most city on the famous romantic road, and has been home to many saints, kings and emperors (including Charlemagne) dating back to the 7th century.

The rulers of the day lived on a hill above town in the Festung Marienberg (Marienberg fortress), where defensive fortifications have stood in some manner since 1000 B.C. In the 18th century Marienberg became "inadequate" and the ruling bishops moved into the newly constructed Baroque palace, the Residenz (I bet it took a long time to think up that name).

We walked around town and saw all the interesting sites and after conquering the climb to Marienberg we came back down into town and had beer and brats at a festival near the Rathaus. Unfortunately, we dilly-dallied too long and missed the last entrance into the Residenz so we'll have to go back to get a look at the inside.

We stopped over to say hello to a friend of Shelly's from OBC who lives in Wuerzburg - another Army dentist who is also friends with Eric George who we know from UF. We all hung out for a bit, had a couple drinks and caught up a bit before heading home.

Overall, we liked Wuerzburg a lot. It is similar to Heidelberg in that they both are home to a university and have a young, energetic feel. However, Wuerzburg is larger and has more sights to see.
