Well, we didn't go on the Wine Road or to Mainz. Instead we decided to check out Rudesheim, a popular tourist destination which is Germany's most well known wine village. Rudesheim's wine making history dates back to the Romans, and the Roman influence can be felt in many areas through this part of Germany as there is a definite Mediterranean flare and even a few Roman ruins. Rudesheim is also a starting point for a scenic Rhine cruise.
Here are a few pictures from our trip - including the famous Drosselgasse (a street lined with neat wine taverns with great outdoor seating) views from our walk up to the Niederald Denkmal (a monument sybolizing Germany's unification following the Franco-Prussian war) and Shelly enjoying a favorite German past-time.
We'll post the rest of the pictures on Yahoo.
