The Last Visitor

It isn't quite the Last Emperor, but our Last Visitor is a big deal to us. Welcome, everyone, our umpteenth, and final guest: Mike Netzer...

Mike has been talking the talk about coming over to see Europe, and now he is walking the walk. I picked Mike up on Saturday afternoon from Frankfurt Main Airport, and after a short dog walk and decompress (beer) at our place we set out to see a couple of local sites.

Here is Mike as we set out on our day at Ronneburg castle, a short 12k drive from Hanau and popular destination for many in US Army Hanau.

After a tour of the castle, and 113 step climb to the castle tower, we had worked up a bit of an appetite, and thirst. The restaurant at Ronneburg is quite good - and a schnitzel and weizen beer hits the spot for any guest on our side of the Atlantic.

Prost!!

Next stop: Buedingen. Another 9k from Ronneburg is a very quaint, very German, town called Buedingen - former home to the 1/1 Cav. Division which has recently redeployed Stateside.

Buedingen has everything a newbie American tourist is looking for - it is old (pre1100's), there is an intact city wall, and the old city center is consists almost entirely of cobbled streets and half-timbered houses.

Here Mike is posing at the entrance to the Buedingen castle; which is still occupied and as a result only open for tours once or twice a year.

On the way home from Buedingen we stopped for a photo of the Ronneburg castle.

Look everyone, tourists!!

I guess we pushed Mike a little too hard after a long flight. Unfortunately, Mike woke up before we could get the toothpaste and razor.

Mike had asked if we needed anything from the U.S., my first reaction was no, however after further thought I asked Mike to pick up some Just Tomatoes brand dried fruit. Shelly had picked up a sampling while we were in the States, and Madison particularly likes the peas, strawberries and peaches. Mike was nice enough to pick up two containers of strawberries and a container of peaches, therefore we let Mike do the honors today for Madison's mid-morning snack. Madison sends thanks also to Stephanie for sending two containers of peas that arrived this week. I guess I won't have to hunt for snacking items for a couple weeks at least.

Mike is here until the 22nd of August and who would want to spend all that time hanging around Hanau with Madison and me? So, Mike is off to Munich until Thursday when he returns and will roll to Ireland with Shelly and I - Madison will spend another weekend with Aunt Tracy and the Ballards.

Don't fret, if you want to track Mike's European Adventure, he has a blog. Mike was pretty into updating the blog during his short stay with us, so I have faith that if he has the means to post that he will keep us all up to speed on his adventure. I can't promise anything regarding the content of those posts however, so view at your own risk :)
