In Germany there is often more than one town with the same name, like Rothenberg. In order to tell them apart, the towns will have an extended name that indicates what the town is near; hence, Rothenberg on the Tauber.
Rothenberg offers a sample of the atmosphere from the Middle Ages, and is one of the few cities that has its entire city wall intact - in parts you can walk along the top of the wall just like soldiers did in the old days. The Ploenlein is perhaps the most photographed square in Germany; this section of town is formed by the intersection of two cobble-stone streets, each with a tower and half-timbered houses. Unfortunately, the street was under repair and was not worthy of a picture - you'll just have to come see it for yourself.
We do have some nice pictures below. My favorite is a picture over the Tauber valley snapped from the top of the Imperial Tower; this shot looks across town toward the main gate leading into town with part of the city wall in the foreground. There's also a shot of Rothenberg's two most famous criminals and the walkway along the top of the city wall.
